Karyn's Cooked
Last night Jen H. and I headed down to Karyn's Cooked for dinner. Karyn is probably better known for her raw vegan restaurant (which we'll be trying out next week), but her cooked food is certainly notable as well. This was the first time I'd actually been inside the restaurant, although I'd tried a few things there when I did the Veggie Bike and Cook.
One of the first things I mentioned to Jen when we arrived was that I'm not accustomed to going to an all-vegan restaurant. I'm used to going someplace where I look at the menu, assess the few vegan options and go from there. There's something nerve-wracking (and yet liberating!) about being able to pick anything from the menu.
I guess because there were so many appetizing things, we decided to share our entrees. We tried the grilled polenta and the meatloaf. The polenta was crisp on the outside and smooth on the inside, with occasional flecks of red and green peppers. This was covered in a combination of wild porcini and shiitake mushrooms. Delicious!
The meatloaf was excellent, too. It was almost spicy, although I couldn't figure out exactly what spices were used. It was incredibly flavorful, though, and came with mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli.
For dessert we tried the lemon meringue pie. When I say tried, I mean "totally demolished." This stuff was GOOD. For me, I think the most impressive part was the "meringue." While obviously not egg whites, it was really tasty and light. Yum!
Noteworthy, too, is that this place has some of the better "ambiance" of any veggie restaurant to which I've gone. A lot of vegetarian restaurants can get kind of "hippie" or just otherwise strange, but this place is pretty classy. I'd definitely call it a good date spot.
