Karyn's Raw Vegan Gourmet

Jen and I headed over to Karyn's Raw Vegan Gourmet Restaurant for dinner Thursday night. I didn't really know what to expect. Would it be cold? Would it be boring? Would it be salad? We had a great dinner at Karyn's Cooked last week, so I hoped for the best.

The meal began with a kale chip.

A kale chip? Hmm. It's pretty. In fact, it looks more like decoration than food. But we tried it. And it was really good! It had been dehydrated so it was quite crispy, then it seemed to have been glazed with something slightly sweet. Yum!

For an appetizer we ordered cremini mushrooms stuffed with walnut pate. These were totally gorgeous, and we both dug in before I could snap a picture. Luckily I got one before we ate all of them!

For our entrees Jen ordered the ravioli, and I had the chili. Aside from a few obvious things, neither of us could quite figure out what went into each. Maybe the most interesting thing we found out was that the "pasta" that made up her ravioli was made from sliced turnips! I tried one and it was SO good. The filling was remarkably cheese-like, the turnips lent the dish a slightly sweet flavor, and the sauce was fragrant and full of olives. Wow. The chili was good, too - I know it contained sprouted adzuki beans and chopped red peppers, but I don't know what else was in it. Something tasty, that's for sure. I think the key was that both of these dishes must have been chock-full of fresh herbs. Yum.

Even though we were actually pretty full, we figured we had to try a dessert. This was labeled as tiramisu on the menu, and although it differed quite a bit from traditional tiramisu, it was absolutely delicious. Buried in the cream (which I think is made from some type of pureed nut) were loads of sliced strawberries, and I believe the drizzle on top is made from carob.

I don't know how they do it - this was rich and decadent, and Karyn uses no refined sweeteners! I have a LOT to learn. :)
