Sushi
Chris and I were headed to IKEA today and on the way we decided we'd go to Mitsuwa, too. I was in the mood to make sushi!
Clockwise from the top we have oshinko (pickled radish), shiitake mushrooms, everything, avocado, carrot and cucumber, and carrot.
This was my first time making sushi, and it was really fun! Easier than I thought it would be, too. I'm glad I had a partner, though - sushi feels like social food to me. Along the way we learned a few things:
1. If you are making sushi for just two people, 6 rolls is WAY too much. We didn't think this out at all, we just started making them. It was nice to have a variety, but there was so much left over. The picture only shows 1/3 of what we made. Yeah.
2. You really don't need to put a whole lot of rice on the nori. The first ones we made (the carrot roll and oshinko roll) were enormous. It's much better to put a very thin layer of rice down.
3. When slicing the rolls, make sure to have a well-sharpened, moistened knife. The sushi we sliced before realizing this was less than gorgeous to say the least.
While we were at Mitsuwa I also pointed out some containers of natto to Chris. Bad move. He insisted we try them, despite my warning that many people find the flavor and texture to be pretty offensive. But if he was game, I wasn't backing down. We bought a package.
I think this picture describes my feeling better than words could...
It wasn't horrible. The little mustard packet that came with it even made it practically edible. But plain... Ech. I couldn't handle more than a couple of bites.
